Each new era deserves its own version of the Final Fantasy series. The sixth installment, originally released in 1994, is receiving a remaster. This updated version will be accessible on Steam, Google Play, and the App Store starting February 23. The remaster will stay true to the original, catering to a new generation of players while preserving its classic charm.
Unlike the drastic changes made to Final Fantasy VII, developers opted for a more subtle approach with this remaster. It serves as the final entry in a series of remasters that have respectfully treated the original games. Existing content from previous remasters, including additional content for consoles and mobile devices, will not be included. The game remains largely untouched, with minor enhancements such as a bestiary and illustration gallery. The user interface has also been slightly updated, retaining the essence of the 1994 classic.
The remaster features revamped visuals with 16-bit sprites while maintaining a pixelated style. The OST has been updated, overseen by Nobuo Uematsu, the original soundtrack composer. The music sets the tone for the game, with Square Enix even releasing a special preview focusing on the music. Players can also enjoy their own playlists while playing, thanks to a built-in music player with accessible buttons during gameplay.
The game will launch on Steam and various mobile app markets on February 23, priced at $14.39 on Steam. There is an option to purchase the entire remaster bundle for $95.94.
