Even though iOS 15 is not a groundbreaking new operating system, it contains several incredible features that can greatly enhance your user experience and security while also addressing the bugs present in previous iOS versions. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to safely update to iOS 15.
Backup First!
While updating an iPhone or iPad is generally safe these days, there is always a possibility of failure. Thankfully, you can safeguard your important personal data by creating a backup of your device either on your desktop or iCloud. Here is how you can do it.
How to create an iCloud backup:
- Go to “Settings”, tap your name, then “iCloud” and “iCloud Backup”
- If the toggle is turned off, simply tap it to turn on and tap “Backup now” to prepare for the update.
How to create a desktop backup:
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC or Mac via cable;
- Use iTunes on Windows, or simply access your connected device through finder on Mac OS Catalina or newer.
- Adjust backup in iTunes or select “Back up all of the data on your iPhone to your Mac” in Finder.
Let’s Update
Here’s how to update your iPhone or iPad properly:
- Open the “Settings” app, tap “General”, and “Software Update” at the top of the list.
- Give your device a while to check if the update is available. If it is, the option to update will appear on the screen. Simply tap “Install Now” and agree to the terms and conditions to begin updating.
- If the offer does not show up on the screen, scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the “Update to iOS 15” button. Tap it and allow the device to download and install the update. Confirm by entering the passcode and wait for the download to complete.
Once you have figured out the update process, connect your device to the charger and let it install for about 15-30 minutes. Your iPhone or iPad should be at least 50% charged to begin the update, so charging may take an additional 20-40 minutes. Use this time to relax!
The upcoming iOS update is iOS 15.1. The new beta version includes minor bug fixes, improved accessory connectivity, and various enhancements for developers.
